Cancer nursing is a rapidly developing speciality. It encompasses some of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of modern health care. This text reflects the breadth of learning cancer nurses now require. It is aimed primarily at nurses entering the speciality for the first time or undergoing specialized training, though all nurses and therapists should find its focus on health care from the patient's point of view relevant. The book takes an integrated approach, setting illness and care in context. It examines previously neglected areas to create a comprehensive picture of cancer care grounded in the most up-to-date knowledge and research, and the day-by-day experience of patients and professionals. The book is divided into seven sections which build around the following themes: cancer and society; the experience of cancer; the experience of treatment; the management of cancer care and the experience of nursing; palliative care and cancer; health services and cancer care; and research and cancer care. The book includes contributions from clinicians, educators and researchers. It responds to the increasing role of higher education in nursing, and to the growing numbers of nurses taking specialized diplomas and degrees.

Customer Reviews
an excellent book that takes you through the cancer journey
A well referenced book that considers cancer, not only from the biological aspect, but also through the eyes of society and the individual. The authors descibe the book as a departure from the standard textbook - they certainly achieve this. The reader is given clear and concise information, that does not confuse but illuminates. The book is very clearly person orientated, with current research to support all aspects and quotes from patients adds an extra depth to the discussion. The book contains all relevant areas linked to cancer, such as What is cancer?, the experience of cancer, the experience of treatment and the management of cancer related problems. Each section is well written and easy to follow. Further chapters consider specific client groups such as children, elderly and minority ethnic groups. The authors summarise with discussions as to further research and health care services necessary for the future of cancer care. The book takes the novice in cancer care to a greater understanding, but at the same time, readers experienced in this area, will have an excellent reference book. A good book to read, but also a great source of reference and some aspects as points of debate and discussion.
