The second edition of The Biology of Disease is an introductory level text on the biological principles of human disease. The book is aimed at medical students in degree courses in biomedical science.
The book fuses the biological (physiological and biochemical) processes which underlie the clinical manifestations of disease. As such, it brings together material which is conventionally dealt with by several books. The authors have covered the fundamentals of each topic in a readable manner, which should encourage students to develop a fuller understanding, where necessary, by reference to more comprehensive texts.
- Integrates basic science and clinical medicine.
- Detailed case studies at the end of each chapter which emphasise the clinical setting.
- New chapters on transplantation immunology, anaemia, toxicology & poisoning.
- The use of non–technical language for the descriptions in the case studies to ensure that all students will comprehend the underlying principles.

Customer Reviews
Good coverage of the latest research.
This is an excellently written book; not a core text for pathology but definitely for distinction candidates and those with a deeper interest into the molecular biology of pathological process. I was researching the link between the Epstein Barr virus and Hodgkin's disease and found very little coherent material published in the journals. This book, published this year, had a diagram and explanation of the proposed onco-virus action that was as clear as it was comprehensive. It contains many gems of information that are just the ticket for spicing up essays and are of great significance. The chapters on the cell cycle, inflammation and the immune system are wonderfully comprehensible. The explorations of the current thinking on the genetics of cancer, the mechanism of invasion and metastasis, bacterial and viral infections, gene and chromosome disorders are well written and peppered with photos and exquisite diagrams. 34 detailed cases reports help consolidate the principles and pose an enjoyable diagnostic challenge at the end of the book. There are very few competing texts in this field and this is the best one I have come across. I promise that time taken to dip into this book will be well rewarded.
The Biology of Disease - Very useful for Biomedical Science
This book was essential reading for my PgCert in Biomedical Science and would be useful for the BSc also. It overviews various diseases and goes into the roles of the different biomedical disciplines in their diagnosis and monitoring, including diabetes and cancer. It gives a good overview of biomedical science from the patient/clinician point of view.
