A tale of a man coping with love, life, deceit & the future
John McLaren has worked wonders again. Like his first book I found this book slow to get into. Yet like "Press Send" he slowly draws you in and thoroughly absorbs you within the story.
The book centres on Calum. He is in love with Marianne, his ex-wife; who herself loves money. Lacking this one thing she leaves him. In order to get away from his sorrows Callum traces his family roots, which leads him to the Hebrides where he finds not only his one relative but also a hostile reception.
Morag, his one relative, teaches Calum the ability to see things in the future - his 7th Sense. When Calum applies his new skills to the lottery he attracts a lot of attention from various shady people. Things get worse for Callum from then on.
Without giving to much away, things change pretty quickly and not everything is as it seems. Suffice to say it involves deceit, love, betrayal and war. All good ingredients for a good plot.
This is generally a light hearted book with even the darker scenes having a slightly humorous slant running through them. If you liked "Press Send" you'll enjoy this. If you haven't read any of John McLaren's books yet then this is as good a place to start reading them as any.
A very good and sometimes funny book
I had never read John McLaren before. This is my first time, Certainly it won't be my last. This book keeps you on your edge because it has many unexpected twists.(Even the acknowledgements page has one of these!) It is very well written; no beating about the bush. The plot cannot be taken seriously and sometimes verges on the humurous. But is is highly entertaining. I certainly enjoyed it. I look forward to the other titles by John McLaren.
Action, adventure... action!
I was put off McLaren's earlier book by the title - Press Start (I think) was just too Windows 95 for my liking... But after reading this, I'll definitely dig a copy out.
This international adventure novel combines world politics (albeit slightly simplistic ones) with lottery greed, love (though not much sex) and pseudo-science. All in all it's an enjoyable mix. Not a book to make you think too much, but I never reckoned that cerebral passtimes were all they're cracked up to be anyway. If you want to put the brain in neutral, sit back and enjoy a straighforward good read... you could do a lot worse than this book.
