Part of the first "Star Trek" crossover series in which one story runs through the "Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine" periods through to "Voyager". The return of the Furies may be a challenge too powerful even for Captain Sisko, with the security of the Federation and Gamma Quadrant at stake.

A Blip in the Series
Star Trek Deep Space Nine is know for its in depth character analysis. However, this book is fast approaching overkill. The opening chapters if fantastic, as is the overall story line. The problem lies with the fact that it takes so long for anything to get done. It takes nearly half the book before we actually get introduced to the aliens who defeated the Furies. Alongside this, is a side story of Kira fighting of a bunch of terrorists and then the same aliens Sisko faced in the Gamma Quadrant.
The book does have some pluses. The overall storyline - particularly the discovery of the ancient Dax. The portrayal of Bashir facing a possible future is also well done; as is the discovery of the Defiant frozen for nearly 500,000 years - one of the coolest bits of the book.
2 stars is harsh, but the book tried to achieve too much, and the aliens used to defeat the Furies just do not feel as much of threat as we are meant to believe - in additon they are also very similar to the way the Borg behave.
Overall its a snail paced book, a few goods bits that keep you reading, but for the rest of the book its a chore.
Important to the Invasion story line, but not a great book
After reading both 'Invasion 1: First Strike' and 'Invasion 2: Soldiers Of Fear', I thought this book would be of a similar standard... I was wrong. Although it is important in getting the story line to the furies, and actually tells us more about how they were expelled from the Alpha Quadrant, the book itself is overloaded with 'technobabble', making it difficult to understand and highly confusing at points. Also, many of the characters act out of character (e.g. Odo understanding technological talk), and many of the simple technical details are wrong (such as the Defiant using tractor beams and transporters while cloaked).
Although I would reccommend this book if you are getting into the 'Invasion' series, I do not consider this one of the better books in my Star Trek library.
Brilliant!
This book was great! The back and forward in time storyline was confusing, but nevertheless exciting. If you like travelling forward into the gamma quadrant and back in time, read it!
