About the Author

Phillip Kerman is an independent programmer, teacher, and writer who specializes in Macromedia products. His degree in imaging and photographic technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology was earned back when "multimedia" had a different meaning than it has today. One of Phillip's internships, for example, involved programming multiple slide projector presentations with dissolves synchronized to a sound track-the multimedia of the 1980s. In 1993 he found Macromedia Authorware a natural fit for his interests and skills. After getting his start at The Human Element, Inc., he moved back to Portland, Oregon, to work on his own.

Phillip has transitioned his expertise from Authorware to Director and, now, to Flash. Over the past decade, he has had to adapt to a total of 20 version upgrades-Flash MX 2004 being the most significant of them all! In addition to retooling and building his own skills, Phillip finds teaching the biggest challenge. He has trained and made presentations around the world, in such exotic locations as Reykjavik, Iceland; Melbourne, Australia; Amsterdam, Holland; and McAlester, Oklahoma. His writing has appeared in Macworld, on the Macromedia DevNet Web site and Developer Resource Kit CD-ROM, and in his self-published The Phillip Newsletter (http://www.phillipkerman.com/newsletter).

Phillip is also the author of Flash MX 2004 for Rich Internet Applications and ActionScripting in Flash MX from New Riders Publishing.

Customer Reviews

Excellent book for beginners5
Unlike another book I have read about Flash, this one is excellent for those of you learning flash from the beginning. I also bought with it the learn actionscript in 24 hrs book, and that picks up the actionscript areas that are left untouched in this book. The absence of a cd-rom is nothing bad, cd - roms normally raise the price of the book. This is a book that I would recommend for those looking for a firm foundation in Flash MX.

Full of tips and useful facts5
I bought this book for my upcoming Flash MX introductory class after having read some of the reviews here. I've been working through the lessons for the last two days, and am very impressed. This book is the first one on Flash that I myself has learnt much from, both regarding the program it teaches, and also - not less important - the general tips regarding sounds, animation, file size.
This is a very good book for beginners. You get good habits initially, and you learn what the veterans use years of trying-and-failing(-and-loosing-customers) on.
I have not yet found anything that's wrong in this book, no errors. (At the present I'm preparing hour 11)
There might be some minor stuff, like not mentioning ALL the ways of doing things, but that's not important before you go for certification as Flash Designer or Developer.
My recommendations!

Excellent if your new to Flash5
Well i had already bought and read the SAMS Flash 5 book and found it very useful. This book is basically the same content with some different pictures and text to relate to MX thrown in. The layout and "feel" of the book are both still excellent, giving a great insight into how to get strated in Flash. So as an owner of the previous Flash 5 book i feel a bit let down, even the examples given are the same in both books.
This is still an excellent book though for the newbie using Flash.

So if you have the Flash 5 book then don't bother with this, not enough has changed between the books. However, if you don't already own the Flash 5 book then this is an excellent place to start your Flash journey.
