A great look at Panther's capabilities
I bought this book with a little trepidation: I'm new to Mac OS X, and having bought and studied many similar books for Windows I expected much of the same boring mediocrity. How shocked I was when I got it then!
This is a fantastic introduction to just about every facet of Panther. Fine- it doesn't go deep enough for some tasks, but it sure gives the reader a broad skills' base in the major selling points of this great OS. For example, I recently used the section on iDVD to walk myself through DVD production; I constantly turn to the Unix (command line) chapter for help in using the shell; and I have to say that the section on Apache is good enough to get your own web server running in an hour or so. On top of that, there are portions of the book that cover things like installing software from the command line, using X Windows, and getting to grips with the file system of Panther.
Add to this a command list summary available on the web site of the publisher (this can be printed off in PDF format) and what you end up getting here for very little cash is a resource that will help you with just about anything you want to do with Panther. I'm now moving on to Apple Certification, so it might be obvious that this book has been instrumental in giving me the foundation I needed in this great OS before doing so.
Buy it. You won't be sorry you did!
This book is One of 3 books, that will make you a Panther
Super User.
If your are new to Mac OS X . something and want to learn how to navigate the Gui as effecient as possible without digging to deep into the BSD unix part of the Operating sytem, then this book is not for you. A book like MacOS X the missing Manual does that a lot better and I can clearly recommend that to the abovementioned purpose. If however your have moved passed that stage or want to know how to use the terminal and great deal of the cool opensorce softwares bundled with Mac OS X I Recommend this book. Do not skip the GUI part of the book anyway reading that part gives you an understanding of the authors writing style, and it will make it easier to understand what they means when you moves into uncharted waters. The decription of netinfo and how to use it in the GUI part of the book is a more complete than the decription i the missing manual. Understanding the Authors writing still I am learning a lot of the Mac's way of using Unix and I really looks forward to moving forward in the book.
The 3th book I would recommend on your road to become a MacOS X super user is
Ted Landu's MacOS X helpline. This book is a book who teaches you how to troubleshoot and prevent problems when somethings go wrong. Working a a Apple Product specialist in On of Denmarks largets appledeals these 3 books really helps me
