Updated through the end of 1999, the second edition discusses some 4,200 primary, secondary, and reference works, an increase of 1,300 titles over the first edition. The temporal coverage has been expanded to include the Republican period; sections on non-verbal salutations, weights and measures, money, and furniture have been added; the chapters on language, etymology; people, geography; chronology; warfare, leisbu, food, and the Chinese world order have been thoroughly revised; and the subject index has been enlarged to include 1,500 technical terms.

Review
The content of this book is extremely rich? One has to admire the effort and ability the author has shown in tracing down some of the obscure publications from less well-known publishers? This book will doubtless become the essential buyers' guide for every librarian of sinology for months to come! -- Wang Tao "Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society"
Customer Reviews
The day I bought this was like an extra birthday for me!
What can you say about this book? If you want to study Chinese history, and have access to a good library, this book is essential. Even if you don't, much of it can be read as an good solid introduction to Chinese culture.
The mistakes noticed are negligible, and then only in the new additions, eg the description of OCR and graphical computerised versions of collectania seems to be a bit out. But that cannot take away in any significant manner from a superb book! A must have.
