This text provides an account the Society of Jesus in its founding years, with the aim of improving the understanding of the Jesuits in history and today. Following the Society from 1540 through 1565, it shows how this sense of mission evolved, considering topics such as the Jesuits' teaching, their preaching, their casuistry, their work with orphans and prostitutes, their attitudes toward Jews and "New Christians" and their relationship to the Reformation. The text also details the Society's manifold activities in Europe, Brazil and India.

An impressive - and appaling - masterpiece5
First of all let me thank amazon.co.uk for giving me the opportunity of addressing its visitors on commenting John W. O'Malley S.J. book. I think Father O'Malley wrote an excellent book that is plenty of wisdom and more often than not it is also whimsical. That is the true work of an eloquent scholar that does his best in explaining to the readers how the Society of Jesus came into being. Its interdisciplinary approach gives us an accurate account of how a few group of priests founded the Jesuits . Fr. O'Malley also succeeds when he explains the main aim of Ignatius Loyola in founding the Society and how it developed in its first 25 years. This book is a must for anyone interested in 16th century history, in the jesuits and above all for anyone interested in a human adventure. Fr. O'Malley S.J. really wrote a book FOR THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD-AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM , as the jesuit motto says.
