"Scale and Scope" is Alfred Chandler's first major work since his Pulitzer prize-winning "The Visible Hand". Representing ten years of research into the history of the managerial business system, this book concentrates on patterns of growth and competitiveness in the US, Germany, and Great Britain, tracing the evolution of large firms into multinational giants and orienting the late 20th century's most important developments.

Customer Reviews
A thorough analysis of the origins of large business
This is an in-depth analysis of the rise of large multi-divisional managerial businesses in the USA. The USA gave us the managerial methodologies for running the large corporations. Chandler charts the origins and development of the techniques and the new economic class of managers.
It is an interesting historical journey from mercantile, colonial commercial and industrial structures through the development of the vast railway networks to large businesses that are familiar today.
You can dig into this book as deeply as you like. Chandler offers lots of evidence, which you can work through. If you prefer you can study his theory and conclusions and still understand his arguments clearly.
