A great laugh!
Everyone loves chocolate, don't they? But too much is bad for you. John does not care; he just loves sweets. His mum warns him, his dad warns him but it does not have any effect at all. John finds a very unusual but special coin and he buys a box of chocolates (or so he thinks) but he is tricked...
This book is a great story. It is funny, a bit scary, thrilling - overall very good! It is great for 7 - 11 year olds who like exciting stories because it is a really big adventure!
I would rate this book 6/ 10. I have only one criticism and here it is: the story line is just like another story about a greedy king and the only difference really is that in `The Chocolate Touch' it is chocolate but in `King Midas and his golden touch' it is gold. The titles are even similar! Many of the vents are alike and both stories have the same moral at the end - greediness will bring sadness and a balance of things are good for you. Patrick Skene Catling, the author of this book, I don't think asked the author of `King Midas' for the ideas. But who knows?
The Magic Touch
This enchanted story about John will have the taste buds going in reading for every child. John is a chocoholic and wants nothing more than chocolate but when suddenly everything he touches becomes chocolate he soon finds himself not quite the fan he thought he was. As John's life becomes interrupted by his glove and skipping rope turning to chocolate and his inability to do his maths test as his pencil turns to, yes you got its, chocolate, the humour of this book will have children giggling all the way through.
Following John as he encounters chocolate syrup and milkshakes, as well as chocolate on its own allows the children to taste and visualise what is happening to the main character in the book. With the magical twist at the end all children (and adults) will want to read the book again and again. This is a tasty little book which you can really get your teeth into.
