a gay how-it-is sweet sixteen story
It took me only about two days to read this one. Every out of the closet, not so out of the closet and in the closet gay will be recognize himself in the story. The man knows what het talks about. It's a story that doesn't avoid difficult subjects as discrimination and gay bashing, outing and parents.
One of the sweetest things I read in a long time.
This is the gay answer to teen movies.
Worthy if a little dull
The author has a degree in counselling, and by golly it shows. The story is based on a catalogue of issues rather than a narrative. We get homophobia and gay bashing, coming out, parental reactions and peer pressure, support groups, safe and unsafe sex, etc. etc.. It seems as if the author started with a list and then made sure the book covered all the problems that young gay people might face. This may be excellent for gay teenagers, and I wish I had had a book like this when I was that age, but taken simply as a novel it lacks flair. The writing is solid but not inspiring, and it won't make you laugh.
One thing that surprised me was the use of the word "spaz". Given the author's obvious disapproval of all the derogatory words for gay, it is a pity that Sanchez doesn't seem to think that people with cerebral palsy and similar conditions deserve some respect as well.
Excellent storyline
This book is a wicked one. If you're a young reader, looking for a fun and interesting read, and are thinking about buying it just do it and you are guaranteed to love it. You can see yourself in all three of the main characters.
I went on to read Rainbow High, which is just as good. It was exacatly what i was looking for when i needed a book that would just take me away from a boring life. If Alex Sanchez is reading this, please bring out a third book, you don't know how much it means it to us! Cheers.
