Customer Reviews

An informative but infuriating book!3
It is difficult to know where to begin in reviewing this book. It has good points and bad points, but lets start with the positives!

Good points:

1. The book is comprehensive, yet reasonably easy to get into, as the introductory chapters on embryology, and brain morphology are for the most part very good.

2. It contains clinical panels relating the theory to clinical practice. These are excellent, and help to maintain interest.

3. Summaries and MCQs are included at the end of each chapter which serves as a good review of what has been said.

4. The photographs of sectioned brains, and MRI images are very useful for getting a 3D understanding of what is described in the text.

Bad points:

1. Some of the chapters are very difficult to read, as some of the language is (paradoxically) very unscientific - the reticular formation of the brainstem having "...scant regard for the midline" is just one example. Some explanations are also rather incoherent, and seem to assume that the reader can fill in all the gaps, which the author hasn't covered.

2. A few of the diagrams and figures are very poor, and in some cases actually contradict what is said in the text. Better labeling of the diagrams would help (and avoid having to hunt around in the text for what the abbreviation means), as would the use of more colour.

Summary: A decent book, good value for money, just don't expect to be able to use it for "instant revision notes" as it will take you a long time to wade through the explanations in order to extract what you need to know.
