Product Description

The notion of addressing bad health and promoting good health among people with learning disabilities is relatively new. Concepts of 'normalisation' of services, integration of people into local communities and providing an 'inclusive' (rather than exclusive) ethos for care have led to the understanding that people with learning disabilities have the right to be treated with the same respect as everyone else. Recognition of their spiritual, legal, political, and sexual rights has therefore been near the top of the agenda for some time now. The last piece in the jigsaw is recognition of their right to live long and healthy lives the subject of this book.

The book takes a very practical focus, and incorporates short case studies, practice examples, 'think' points and action points. It is nevertheless grounded in solid theory.

There are four sections, working from the general political and professional factors which impinge on health, through to specific strategies for assisting individuals to improve health and reduce high-risk behaviours. The focus throughout is the person with learning disabilities any health models or pieces of legislation are reviewed in this light.

Customer Reviews

A timely book on a very important subject area.5
For people who have learning disabilities issues related to their health are very important. For the people who help support and care for the person with a learning disability these issues have long been a complex area.

Moving from the social aspects of care of the past decades to re incorporate health is one of the facets of my job and this book provides the reader with a wealth of both practical and theoretical themes which challenge present thinking and help shape future theory and practice.

I have recommended the purchase of the book to my work environment and also the student learning disability nurses who attend our courses. Good health linked with the other facets of being a human being are vital to all people and enable holistic care to be practiced. This leads to greater intergration of everyone in society on a more equal footing.

The chapters in the book address contempory issues in a new and exciting way. I feel we have been waiting for such a book to be published for sometime and we have not been disappointed by the results.

With Primary Care Trusts about to take life from April this year this book should hold vital information to all professionals involved in health services around the country.

Well done to the authors for choosing the subject matter and producing this exciting/excellent book.
