A Different Context of philosophy
The author lets you know what you are in for when he says his book is written not from an academic point of view but an unflinching confrontation with social and historical conditions.
And what a battle it is. If you have never struggled with the likes of Plato, Jesus, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Machaivelli, Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Kant et al, you might do well to read intermediate texts first.
It may seem odd that a marxist might be interested in the classical philosophers, yet the author sets these thinkers in their social and historical conditions and reminds the reader that from the context of late capitalism, we can learn from them and explain a lot by applying the historical and social analysis. Quite interesting to read what people were saying immediately prior to the collapse of USSR and the "Cold War" as well (it was published in 1988).
Not really a book for beginners but well worth the (extra) effort if you do set out from here.
