Great book for beginners & Novices
This book is a great book for anyone wanting to learn more about the music business and it's structure. I bought it and read it within a week after witch i felt better about my general knowledge of what to do, how to do it and who to do it with.
I also went on to read other more meaty music business books with confidence.
It gives a general and broad overview of all you need to know from recording sessions to royalties, contracts to publishing it also has contact addresses for record companies and publishers. It is not for the advanced music business type person because eventhough it breaks down the structure of the industry there are better, more detailed books on the market like Donald S Pasmanns all you need to know about the music buisness (uk edition yellow cover).
However This book is easier to read and digest you wont feel overwhelmed, like you are studying for a degree in music business. The only other book i know like this that i would recommend is the one by Virgin How to make it in the music business.
Still if you want to know more about the music business this is the book to buy after it you can go on to read other more intermediate books.
Hope this helps!
Pop Idol
A fairly standard guide to the basic wheelings and dealings of the music industry.
Overall, the book is poorly laid out, and leaves a lot of specific questions unanswered. You would expect, coming from two 'knowledgeable' professionals within the music industry that you would get a lot of valuable information, but their writing is drab and skimd briskly over major questions and points. The basic common question and answer format gets tiresome after a short while as well.
If your looking to go into the music business, then you should really look else where...
Really good very insightful!
I bought this book to help with an assignment on them music industry and it's really informative. It has all the information you need in this particular area, an easy read too. If you need a book on this subject buy this one :)
