Customer Reviews

A book to please all Dan fans5
If you ever wondered where they really came from, and how they became the greatest band in the world then this book is for you.

It is a veritable encyclopaedia of information from the humble beginnings of Walter & Donald, through their formative years up to the present (1994) and the latest incarnation, Steely Dan Orchestra.

You can find out who played what and who was cut from what track plus all the trials and tribulations of a band that strived for perfection and nearly got there.

This is a valuable source of reference for all fans and a fascinating insight for the curious.

Fact-filled but poorly written.2
I wanted to know more about Steely Dan and this book provided me with plenty of facts and figures. The prose, however, is dire and the author makes subjective statements that damage the book's credibility. I was surprised to read "Through with Buzz" described as a "throwaway" track. In my (subjective) opinion, Through with Buzz is a quite remarkable song ... one of few songs in the Steely Dan canon to feature a string arrangement, and a companion piece to "Charlie Freak", begging the question: "Was Pretzel Logic originally intended as a concept album?".
