Product Description

Glam Rock was never known for its restraint, but The New York Dolls had some claim to being the most outrageous band of them all. Managed by Malcolm McLaren in the early 1970s, this band have influenced many subsequent glam rock groups. Researched through interviews with all the surviving band members, managers, roadies, groupies and hangers-on, the book provides the reader with an insight into the glam rock scene.

Customer Reviews

Essential reading, although writing could be better.4
The New York Dolls... without them there hardly would have been a Sex Pistols. Not only did Johnny Thunders originally come up with all their guitar riffs, but even Malcolm McLaren got to practise his managerial "skills" with them enough to base the Pistol's career on them.

The subject makes this book essential reading as it sheds a light on the history of the foundations of Punk Rock in New York City and London. Nina Antonia isn't really among the best writers of our generation, but her honest intentions and the subject itself make this book a compelling reading experience. Recommended... wholeheartbrokenly!

Glam and Punk Before It All Happened4
This is a great book - very well written and easy to read. It is honest and flows nicely, with good pics and the story covering from before to after the band was together. It was interesting to check what had happened to everyone at the end of the book. It has quite a few anecdotes that are fun to read.
Nina never saw or met the New York Dolls and she tried to picture a fair account of them and the people around them. It is interesting to see a very young McClaren dealing with early "politics to make more money through rock", even if it kills music and the band, before the Pistols and the Clash.
I wish this book was a little more opinionated about the individuals involved, although it does give a good picture of the nastiness of some of the people in the rock buisness, inc. some 'underground' musicians.

Absolutely essential. The BEST book on the Dolls so far.5
This is the book I have been waiting for, ever since I heard "Frankenstien" in the back of a Camaro on a Summer night in 1983. Start with "Please Kill Me"-easily the best book of the 20th Century-then move on to this. You can't lose.
