Music was an important element of cultural life throughout the Middle Ages. Most of our knowledge of medieval music comes from surviving manuscripts, almost all of them connected with the Church. In this book, the history of music writing is covered, and entertaining pictures of musicians in manuscripts show how music was performed.

Exquisite
Beautifully presented and with an excellent text, this is a remarkable edition from the British Library. I have used it as a showpiece for A-level students, and they have been captivated to the point where we were looking at pages from the Eton Choirbook!
Success!
