Product Description

The introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 established the principle of access to all buildings, including churches and church halls, as a civil right. This publication is a guide to meeting the requirements of the Act, and provides detailed information and design guidance to help meet the accessibility needs of people with disabilities. Part III of the Act (Oct 2004) relates specifically to premises, and this edition incorporates guidance drawn from the first years' experience of the Act and the publication of the new Code of Practice relating to Part III issued by the Disability Rights Commission.

disabilties and church access.4
This book details measures for making churches accessible fo people with disabilities.
I think the author has more experience of urban rather than rural churches in his recommendations.
In my wide experience of working with people with a wide range of disabilities, a ramp is only helpful to those few people in wheelchairs. Many disabled people prefer a couple of steps with a handrail to a ramp. Ramps are also difficult fot undertakers carrying coffins.
The thought of installing gates and doors with electric opening devices in an existing building is not realistic given tight budgets and small congregations.
I think the word compromise would have been helpful!!
