The Gardener's Guide to Growing Maples5
In this age of TV garden make-over programmes, Japanese Maples are becoming ever more popular with gardeners, particularly for their colourful Autumn foliage. However, there is much more to the Maple (Acer) family than this. Some Acers have beautiful and unusual leaf shapes, Spring colour, stature and decorative bark. An ever increasing number of these Acers are appearing in nurseries and garden centres and yet while numerous gardening DIY, general and specialist books have been published Acers have been strangely neglected with none being published until now by a British author.

This book is by a British author, James GS Harris, who writes with authority on how plants perform in this country. He is an expert on the genus and owns Mallet Court Nursery in Somerset, which specialises in Maples. The book is very well written and beautifully illustrated. It concentrates on the garden worthiness of the plants but also includes advice on history, culture, propagation, suitability for bonsai (by CP Ellis) and container growing.

I thoroughly recommend this book to you. Other specialist books in this excellent 'Gardener's Guide to Growing' series from publisher David & Charles include 'Hostas', 'Iris' and 'Clematis.' Any and all of these plants would complement your Maples. Like every book in the series they are well worth a place on your bookshelf. Last of all I recommend you take inspiration from the book and buy another Maple.

Lovely, Lovely Book!!5
If I had not bought this myself, it is exactly what I would have wanted for Christmas! The title belies the quality of the book as I almost expected an RHS Plant guide (which are excellent by the way) but a totally different style.

Beautifully illustrated with superb photographs and details, excellent for those developing and interest in Maples.

I will certainly look at the other books in the series now as the first review suggests..

As I said...Lovely, lovely book!
