Product Description

This practical guide is the outcome of many years' hands-on experience and is the sort of book the author would have liked to have been able to access at the time he started, some twenty years ago, to clean and repair pocket watches.Using as examples six of the most typical types of watch from a period spanning the late 18th century to the early 20th century, he takes the intelligent enthusiast through the cleaning and repair process, step by careful step, using photographs of excellent clarity, and in lucid language, characterized by his own friendly and helpful tone. He aims to equip the reader with a sound basic knowledge not just of the process but also all the tools and materials as well as their sources.

About the Author
A member of the British Horological Society, Chris Barrow has been an Electronic design engineer for almost thirty years. For the past twenty years or so, he has been cleaning and repairing pocket watches, to the extent of running a successful, small web-based business as a profitable sideline over the past three years. He is fascinated by the intricate and often beautiful mechanisms of the evolving pocket watch, from the 18th century verge to the precision lever movements of the early 20th century. He sees it as his mission to rescue these lovely things from the scrap heap and to restore them to working order for the enjoyment of others. Chris lives in Leicester with his partner Anne, and their two moggies. He is also a lover of wood, being an enthusiastic carpenter and furniture maker in his spare time.

Customer Reviews

Super Book5
Excellent book. Well laid out and very informative. Being an amateur, I found this book answered many questions other books tend to overlook. Top marks Mr. Barrow ! ! ! Martyn Jones

Not bad for a first book on pocket Watch repairs4
I fall between the first two reviewers, Yes it is irritating to have the same information about say cleaning a dial or cleaning some common parts but it is also a mine of information for people like me who are just starting out on pocket watch collecting and repairs. It does not cover major points such as where and how to apply the correct oils but that is what Google is for! What it does do is give one the insight into the tasks necessary to get started and if you do not pay too much for the book it is good value.

Pocket watch restoration5
An exellent book of concise instructions clearly written and great coloured photo's to help guide the collector or repairer in the restoration of these mechanical wonders, the old pocket watch.
