Medical Problems in Dentistry has become established as the foremost guide for all members of the oral health care team, providing up-to-date information on all the factors that may impinge upon the dental care of patients with systemic disease or on drugs. Extensively updated throughout, this new edition provides information covering a wide range of areas in the developing specialty of Special Needs Dentistry, as well as newly relevant areas such as imported exotic diseases and aspects of transcultural health. An understanding of the possible hazards of operative intervention in patients suffering from each of the conditions discussed provides valuable guidance for every dental practitioner - especially relevant in the face of the growing risk of litigation. Medical Problems in Dentistry is an essential reference for all dental undergraduates, postgraduates on vocational training or studying for the Fellowship or Masters courses, hospital and university dental staff, and for conscientious general dental practitioners, hygienists and nurses who wish to keep abreast of changes in the medical scene.

A welcome 4th edition
This is a welcome 4th edition of a standard work which now recognises the increased range of medical problems relevant to dentistry with up-to-date information on HIV, Hepatitis and chemical dependency, as well as new chapters on disability, special needs dentistry and socio-economic and ethnic issues. Chapter 23 on "Disability, the young and the elderly" gives a particularly good summary of the conditions a dentist might encounter working in a Community Dental Service. The restructured text means that layout and presentation of information is much improved, providing easier access, and many of the photographs are now in colour. I particularly liked the outline of key points at the beginning of each chapter. This is a good general reference work which should be kept in all dental practices.
Good Reference for Dentistry
I have just received the fifth edition of "Medical Problems in Dentistry" which was recommended by a number of lecturers in dental school. In addition to previous edition which covered a large variety of medical problems, this new edition now contains useful information on more recent issues for example newly emerged infections such as MRSA and SARS and life style and health problems associated with different ethnic groups especially refugees. Other interesting information include chapters on women's health (C41), and complementary therapies (C42).
This book offers comprehensive and detailed information regarding medical problems in dentistry, their clinical features and general and dental aspects of each problem. Overall Scully's book is very useful for both dental students and graduates in dental practices.
