Customer Reviews
Just about OK, but far below the SbS Standard
This book is aimed at novice users of FrontPage, and does a barely satisfactory job of getting readers acquainted with the product. Anyone familiar with other books in the Step by Step series, particularly the superb Project or Excel books, is going to be severely disappointed with this one. The exercises lack the structure and accuracy needed for this type of book.
I have a suspicion that this book was written by a team of people, some of whom had negligible knowledge of the product, and who were working against pre-release software. Although I found much of it sloppy, parts of the book were well written, with sensible and properly structured exercises.
It's still probably worth buying, but I hope there are better introductions to FrontPage out there. Microsoft should not be happy with the standard displayed here.
Clear, well organised training guide
I found this Microsoft-approved study guide to be exactly what I was seeking as a Frontpage novice. It covers all you need to know up to intermediate stage. Topics include creating a web site from scratch, inserting lists and tables, enhancing your web site with graphics, working with frames, inserting hyperlinks, creating a database, tracking site traffic and publishing and managing the site. The guide contains a very handy quick reference guide at the back, and the CD which accompanies the book has endless files for you to practise on. The layout is colourful and clear, with plenty of screen captures. The book does not assume a prior knowledge of Microsoft software, however if you are a user of Word, Excel etc., then you can easily skip those parts which cover common elements such as tables or clipart. If you are a beginner seeking a high quality, easy-to-follow practical guide then this will be ideal.
