Enchanting read!
This marvellous book is an instruction manual on how to create your own enchanted garden with trees, shrubs or flowers. It's not all airy-fairy stuff though, as it also deals with very practical matters like cold hardiness zones and soil requirements.
In many ways the book provides delightful reading on the magical meaning of plants based on their shapes, fragrances and colours, plus sound advice on designing, maintaining and planning different kinds of enchanted spaces including shade, container, tree, shrub, groundcover, houseplant and fairy gardens.
The text is interspersed with charming floral and herbal spells, faerie magick and information on feast days and the making of sachets, wreaths and charm bags. You'll be amazed at the wealth of practical applications and flower spells that are available to make life more interesting.
Garden Witchery is an enchanting read as it takes one from practical gardening advice through magickal correspondences and flower folklore to the author's humorous observations and anecdotes. The book contains lovely illustrations and concludes with a glossary of terms, a bibliography and an index.
a joy to read
Having had an interest in wicca for many years, but a distinct lack in the area of green fingers, i thought it time to read up on 'garden magic.' I found this book on Amazon, and was delighted with it. Quite simply a magical read (no pun intended). Ellen Dugan's practical gardening advice is basic, sensible and yet full of the magical history of various plants, plus hints and tips on how to use each plant, and the various celebrations of each time of year. Her tongue-in-cheek personal annecdotes are a welcome breath of fresh air after the many fascinating but rather dry books on wicca, and i quite often found myself grinning, or even laughing out loud at her tales. Fascinating for either a seasoned practicioner or someone who is still a little green. Also it would make a great bridge for those who know little of the subject and who still see it with suspicion. My garden by the way has gone from a green wilderness to a (hopefully) magical and colourful (and fragranced) place to be.
Fantastic! A must buy!
What a great book for gardeners and those interested in magickal elements alike. The author writes with such enthusiasm and gives great planting plans for any type of garden (i.e. shady, sunny, moonlight garden, flora). There is a section on flower folklore and florigraphy which I found fascinating, dating back to medieval times. Folklore meanings behind flowers and plants, and those ideas to plant for specific magickal workings. Although the planting suggestions are linked directly to US temperate zones, you can adapt these for the UK easily. And of course, spells for various topics are included and a great idea at the back of the book is a blank gardening journal for you to use, which is extrememly useful for noting down particular plants to get a hold of. I really can't recommend this book highly enough! Buy it!!
