Synopsis
When Sylvia Compson discovers evidence of her ancestors' involvement with the Underground Railroad, it raises the historical issue of the use of quilts as a method of signalling fugitive slaves.

stitching together the story of the past
Jennifer Chiaverini has written the best Elm Creek book yet. Sylvia's journey into her family's Civil War past throws light on her own future with Andrew - proving that we can learn from history after all. The story of Joanna, a slave escaping from the South, and the immigrant German family who reluctantly take her in is told in journal extracts. Sylvia and her quilter friends try to establish the truth of what exactly did take place in that prelude to the Civil War, as the journal tells a story of betrayal and a community torn apart by politics and conscience. The final remarkable act of courage and atonement finds an echo in Sylvia's decision for her future.
