Customer Reviews

a deeply moving account of the life of a great but humbleman5
Sydney Poitier's account of his life narrated in his book is a must for readers interested in the American dream, whcih nearly always involves some struggle, but other experiences as well when African Americans try to access the dream. On a recent Oprah Winfrey show on which he spoke of his experiences narrated in the book, the marvel was the lack of bitternes, the humour and feeling with which it was all told. The book will sadden many readers of African descent who will empathise with most of his narrative, but there is also a sense of truimph which will uplift readers It is recommended for all those who unfortunately still suffer from mindless prejudice based solely on the colour of their skin or texture of their hair, as well as those who persist in perpetuating such bias and creating the very many obstacles. It is a lesson in triumph over bigotry and prejudice. In this way Poitier could be fairly praised for doing more as a role model for people in his community than many other higher profile protesters. His determination, courage, confidence in self, sprituality and hard work are laudable characteristics for young African Americans, and indeed people of African descent everywhere, to emulate.
