Engrossing and disturbing
I found this book about a modern day Nazi dominated Europe very engrossing (the Nazis won the war, horrifying thought in itself). The plight of Peter as a house slave to a Nazi official was very moving. The book is essentially 3 books in one: Living Hell, Escape and Redemption. I found the book at times very hard to read because of the content, especially in the first section. In fact, there was one particular incident I found deeply upsetting. It was unfortunate that I was on the way home from work sitting on a bus whilst reading this part, and had to stop reading to avoid blubbing out loud. Its not often that a book can do that to me. However, I have to say that I thought this an excellent book and would recommend it to anyone who wants a thoughtful read.
I did have one quibble with the modern day Nazi scenario (other than the obvious disturbing thought of living under the Nazis)and that was that although the end of the war and the Nazi victory was explained, and that America was sidelined by the Nazi victory never having entered the European war, at no time was the empire of Japan mentioned. Even if America had never entered the war in Europe, I personally think they would still have had to fight the Japanese. But the Japanese were never mentioned. A minor quibble.
That aside, I have to say, that I will most definitely get the sequel and I also want to re-read this particular book. Recommended!
Outstanding
This book should be sold in British book shops. An gripping read, and despite the size I read it really quickly.
Yes it is disturbing in places. And yes it does make you wince, but its a book that stays with you for ages. I belong to a book group and despite people having read this book months ago it still comes up in discussion all the time.
