When an old friend from graduate school asks her for help with her job at a top scientific facility, Fred is torn between apprehension at renewing ties to her past and regret for the quiet life she might have led as a physicist entrenched in laboratory research. But on the night they are supposed to meet, her friend is gunned down in cold blood -- seemingly the innocent victim of a mob hit gone wrong. Meanwhile Angel and Co. have been called upon to solve a series of grisly murders. Someone is taking out spellcasters who have, until now, been instrumental in preventing an apocalyptic breach of the barriers which separate our reality from that of other, more deadly dimensions. Fred has a different mission, taking the place of her friend in order to find out the truth behind her death. But when the worlds of scientific research and supernatural killings begin to collide, it is up to her to piece the puzzle together and find the link that will help them save the world.

An excellent read.
This is an excellently written book with spot on characterisation, I read it in record time as I couldn't put it down.
The story is set in the later half of season 4, but pre-Jasmine. Cordy has recently returned to live in the hotel and Wes is still on the outside.
There are several plot threads that all end up combining towards the end; Angel and Gunn are undercover at a gathering of sorcerors and mages, trying to find and defeat a being that has broken through the dimensional walls. They spend most of the book isolated from the gang, which gives us plenty of insight into their relationship, and just how Gunn feels about Angel.
Fred is alone for almost the entire story, getting into, and out of trouble by herself. She is upset at the shooting of an old friend and takes it upon herself to investigate the incident, with an interesting twist at the end. Of course, Lilah is involved, and not in a good way.
She is also involved in Wesley's story. They spend a bit of time together at the beginning of the story, but Wes is soon on his way to help Fred, much to Lilah's annoyance. For the majority of the story after that, Wes is mostly fighting demons that are appearing through the holes between dimensions, and is joined by Connor on and off.
The only down side to the book is that there isn't much of Lorne or Cordelia, they crop up occassionally in dialogue scenes at the hotel, but they don't leave there and are reduced to the odd phone call.
Still, over all, I was very happy with the book. It kept my attention and was well structured so that the plot twists were well hidden until sprung. I'd definitely recommend it to any Angel fan.
Truly Fantastic!!
This was the 2nd Angel book I read. I had been dissappointed by the first but this book was absolutely brilliant.
The narration and characterisation was excellent, involving you fully in the story. The main thing I liked about this book was that it wasn't too predictable and it didn't give the secrets away til the very end. It gripped my interest and I found it very difficult to put down. The whole story built up and crescendoed beautifully... a fantasic read and highly recommended.
