Product Description

Two rabbis, visiting Palestine in 1897, observed that the land was like a bride, 'beautiful, but married to another man'. By which they meant that, if a place was to be found for Israel in Palestine, where would the people of Palestine go? This is a dilemma that Israel has never been able to resolve. No conflict today is more dangerous than that between Israel and the Palestinians. The implications it has for regional and global security cannot be overstated. The peace process as we know it is dead and no solution is in sight. Nor, as this book argues, will that change until everyone involved in finding a solution accepts the real causes of conflict, and its consequences on the ground. Leading writer Ghada Karmi explains in fascinating detail the difficulties Israel's existence created for the Arab world and why the search for a solution has been so elusive. Ultimately, she argues that the conflict will end only once the needs of both Arabs and Israelis are accommodated equally. Her startling conclusions overturn conventional thinking -- but they are hard to refute.

Editorial Reviews

Review
Ghada Karmi's storytelling eloquence is celebrated. Now the sheer power and sense of her analysis throws down a challenge to those who claim the 'problem' of Israel and Palestine cannot be solved. She shows it can. --John Pilger

This is a well-written book, and one of the best accounts of the Arab-Israeli narrative. --Times Literary Supplement, February 2008

The destructive impact Zionism had on the Arab world and on Palestine in particular is presented in this book with lucidity and clarity. ... A must read! --Ilan Pappe, author of A History of Modern Palestine: One Land, Two Peoples

"The demise of the two-state solution makes Ghada Karmi's work a
compelling read. Her book is well-written and extraordinarily honest. "

"Ghada Karmi's direct and incisive prose is a welcome contribution
to a field overburdened by ambiguous, hesitant and evasive contributions."

Customer Reviews

A Most Important Book4
The impact of Zionism on the Middle East and the Arabs is discussed, together with reasons for the unstinting support for the Zionist project by the West. The subsequent extended review of all the attempts at finding a peace for the region makes fascinating reading given the detail that Ghada Karmi brings to the story. The ultimate failure of the so-called 'Two State' solution advocated by the West is cogently argued, as is the realisation that the formation of a single Israeli/Palestinian state is the only possible route to the survival of these two peoples in this disputed territory.
This most important book should be required reading for people in this country who have been subject to a diet of ignorance and bias by the BBC and a number of British newspapers, never more so than now.
Buyers should be aware that this book betrays its origin as an extended essay and is frequently repetitive and too long. It assumes some knowledge of the foundation of Israel and does not present a formal history of the country; for this I would choose the superior books of the historian Ilan Pappe.

How to understand the Palestine tragedy5
This book summerize, in a complete analysis, the reasons why Israel is so powerful and the strategies it uses to make the world believe it is always right, even when the contrary is visible and undeniable. The title refers to a sentence written by two rabbis, at the end of 1800, when they were sent to Palestine to see if the zionist progect could have been implemented. Coming back they wrote referring to Palestine: "The bride is beautiful, but she is married to another man".

Married to Another Man: Israel's Dilemma in Palestine4
A very interesting read. It explains very clearly the problem between Israel and Palestine, its history, international involvement and shows that the Palestine people have been neglected economically, politically by the world community. The book offers some suggestions as to how peace between these two peoples might be achieved. But in the end it seems that the guilt of the West and in particular America and Germany ultimately keeps the conflict alive and well. Very sad indeed.
