Product Description

It was on a Sunday night in 1928 that Billy Hopkins made his first appearance. Billy's tenement home on the outskirts of Manchester would be considered a slum today, but he lived there happily with his large Catholic family, hatching money-making schemes with his friends. This book recalls an upbringing and an environment now vanished.

From the Author
Thanks to customers' reviews
I have just read your comments about my book OUR KID on the Amazon web- site. Many thanks for taking the trouble to make your comments and I am most touched to learn that you enjoyed and got so much out of the book. Yours is the kind of comment that makes the whole business of writing a book worth-while. The knowledge that out there I have communicated emotionally with some reader not know to me personally makes my day. You may like to know that OUR KID has sold over 110,000 copies in

paperback since November 1999. There's a sequel called HIGH HOPES which will be out in hardback in July/August 2000. The paperback will be out in February/March 2001. Many thanks and very best wishes, Billy Hopkins (Author) -- wilfred hopkins

Our Kid , the best read ever.5
Ok so i might be a tad bias here as i am a Lancashire Lass myself and from Salford, Manchester but i can safely say this is the best book i have read in many many years. I first saw the book in a shop at Manchester Airport whilst seeing my only sister (who i call 'Our Kid') off home to Florida USA and i thought then that the book seemed Appropriate. Little did i know that a month later i would be recommending it to EVERYONE i know. This is the only book on here i have ever reviewed and i had such a roller coaster ride of emotians reading it that i just have to tell you.... READ IT... you will not regret it.
I of course had to read the follow up which i would only give a 4* rather than this 5* but i will be buying Kates Story in the morning and hopefully it will be just as good as 'Our Kid'.
Billy Hopkins, you are outstanding in your work and i can only imagine what kind of happy life you have now....fun and happiness i bet.

A moving story tht everyone should read!!!5
My father in law gave me the book to read and I was dubious as it isn't the sort of book I'd normally go for. I was pleasantly suprised as the book was one of the most moving stories I have ever read. It makes you realise how difficult like was for children growing up before and after the war and how much I, and my generation (I'm 25) take for granted. I'll never laugh at my grandmother again when she tells me how easy I've had it - coz I have. I'd highly recommend it to anyone, whatever their age!!

simply the best book i have ever read5
This story of a little boy growing up in the outskirts of Manchester is captures that sentimental value that every book should have. One minute you will laugh and laugh at the funny little boy and the next you will cry at the dreadful tragedy and misfortune Billy has gone through. The characters are brilliant and i will never ever forget this book for as long as i live.
