Product Description

This recipe book for students provides guidance on how to prepare cheap meals and have a varied, interesting and healthy diet. It not only takes into consideration that student grants are very low, but also that there are problems with cooking in halls and storing food communally.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
More Grub on Less Grant is an updated version of the student classic Grub on a Grant. Like it's predecessor it's a small, fun, easy- to-use recipe book centred firmly on the culinary needs of students--this means cheap, quick, easy but tasty food!

Its simple and organised layout allows you to select the type of recipe you want, with chapters on meals for one, cheap food for when money has run out and special dishes for get togethers with friends. Each dish is costed and timed and in the unlikely event of there being any leftovers adds there are some imaginative ideas on what to do with these.

The range of food is hugely varied, from simple snacks to help you when revising, to new more interesting ways to cook basics such as potatoes, rice and vegetables, to impressive and rather exotic salads and curries. Vegetarians are well catered for with some of the tastiest recipes in the book such as "Piperade".

As a student with zero cooking ability apart from making the occasional bowl of pasta, the recipes at times seemed quite advanced--referring to marinating and caramelising with no explanation of what these terms meant. Also, for the really lazy, using more approximate measurements like "half a cup" or "a few spoons" would be an idea--very few student kitchens have a set of weighing scales! Despite this most of the recipes could be made quite easily and a personal recommendation would be the "Garlic Chicken with Spicy Wedgy Pototoes"--delicious!

More Grub on Less Grant contains some great recipes which genuinely don't sacrifice taste for cost--so you can eat well and have more money for books (or beer!). --Thea O'Connor

Customer Reviews

A must for those who think they can't cook!5
Cas Clarke writes for those who have little experience in the kitchen, focussing on problems that besiege cash strapped, short of space students. The principles however translate well into every budget conscious hungry person's daily life. The recipes are cheap, unbelievably easy to follow and guaranteed to impress friends and family alike.Suggestions are even made for leftovers to minimise waste. This step by step approach has revolutionised mealtimes in our household- and dramatically reduced my grocery bills!

BRILLIANT!5
I used the original 'Grub on a Grant' series as a student in the 1990s. I consider myself to be quite a good cook, but with a limited repetoire, so when I began my six months of paternity leave I decided to invest in Cas's lastest offering. It has a great range of recipes, healthy and, of course, cheap. Best of all, they are totally foolproof. Not just for students, but also for impoverished lecturers like me!

Amazing5
I'm currently a student at Northumbria Uni, and living away from home for the first time, was gonna be scary, I mean, cooking for myself? ARGH! Well this book, along with the prequel to it, proved a lifesaver. Buy it if your a student, buy it if youre not. Cas Clarke is officially a genius. :)
