This revised and updated guide to good reading provides a new rating system: "Startpoints", which offer suggestions in different areas of reading; and "Pathways", which lead from a dozen popular books to whole shelves of follow-up reading. The book includes new symbols for "highly recommended" and "masterpiece"; these offer a helpful, at times controversial, guide through the available wide selection of reading material. Kenneth McLeish is the author of "Read a Book a Week", "Myth", "Companion to the Arts in the Twentieth Century" and "Bloomsbury Guide to Human Thought".

An excellent introduction to a wide variety of authors
Though now a couple of years out of date, this is an excellent and highly readable guide to a large number of contemporary and classical writers, with the emphasis being on twentieth century novelists. In most cases a potted guide to that author's (arguably) best work is supplied, along with info on their other books, and other writers who are similar in style, genre or concerns. As an obsessive reader, I have found this an invaluable companion.
