Ebola, Lassa fever, HIV/AIDS, anthrax, leprosy, meningitis - Drs Joseph McCormick and Susan Fisher-Hoch have confronted, studied, probed and fought them all, case by case and on an epidemic scale. This is their story of a quarter-of-a-century on the front lines of the struggle to hold the narrow line separating humankind from what might well be the true inheritors of the Earth: viruses. This book combines accounts of cutting-edge medical research with dramatic stories of survival in some of the most remote places on Earth, where the climate, the terrain and the politics can kill just as surely as any disease.

The haemorrhagic viral diseases, such as Ebola, are among the most elusive and gruesome diseases known to man. Joseph B. McCormick and Susan Fisher-Hoch, a husband-and-wife team formerly of the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta, have spent their lives tracking these pathogens, traversing the globe in heroic efforts to confine them and prevent epidemic. In Level 4, McCormick and Fisher-Hoch recount their most gripping and rewarding experiences, and give insight into the stubborn bravery and driving curiosity that compels them to continually put their own lives at risk for the welfare of humanity.

A first class scientific thriller
If you love thrillers and enjoy books on science then I would highly recommend this book. The authors take you on a fascinating journey into the world of virus hunters - the courageous men and women who risk their lives to find out about killer diseases like ebola, hanta virus and lassa fever. The authors describe how viruses attack the body and the effects of infection. This rates among my favourite books - buy it today!
This book pin points a turning point in my life....
It's true, a couple of years ago when I was in the process of considering my university courses I found this book at the local shop. Upon reading, it gave me a huge insight into the world of immunology, virology and epidemiology. By taking about their experiences the authors immerse you in a world whereby you are introduced to the truly terrifying world of micro-organisms. Diseases which kill you from the inside out in a matter of days to which very little is known let alone a successful solution. Suffice to say that I've read this book umpteen time and am not currently in my 3rd year of University studying Immunology, and hey with a bit of luck and percerverance I would love to study this kind of stuff when I graduate.
