So what if your parents hate each other and want you to have therapy? So what if your holier-than-thou sister (aka The Nun) and her posse have decided you're going to hell? So what if the school tyrant and his goons are hunting you down, or if your best friend has just outed you to a neo-Nazi? Jaz isn't planning to lose any sleep over it - at least until he meets the guy of his dreams at the local gay bar. Suddenly things are a lot more complicated.

Review
'A coming-of-age tale that combines the coolness of Queer as Folk with the tenderness of Adrian Mole' Elle 'Will Davis is a witty writer who effortlessly conjures up the frenetic detail of Jaz's sixteen-year-old world' Independent on Sunday 'The dialogue fizzes with savvy one-liners ... Davis's observations of the dysfunctions of family and school are as sharp as his prose is fresh, and his debut is intriguing, touching and entertaining' Time Out 'Davis's narrative style makes this a stand-out read - it's a cross between Catherine Tate's Lauren and Vicky Pollard ... this is a journal for the Noughties' Gay Times

`A fresh and funny coming-of-age story, this will appeal to the misunderstood teenager lurking within us all'
Independent on Sunday
`Will Davis is a witty writer who effortlessly conjures up the frenetic detail of Jaz's sixteen-year-old world. The way the novel zigzags around in time perfectly mirrors its protagonist's dislocated life'

funny alrounder
Being a Teenager myself this book really interested me, there were some good laugh out loud moments. This may not be a good idea to read if you cannot understand Text speech or abbreviations as there is a lot. Even though i admit some of the situations Jaz get's into are unbelievable, most of them are. Being Bullied is something that happens to most people going through school and coming out may be the hardest thing a teenager with a interest in the same sex will ever have to do.
This book is a good addition to teenagers and adult's book collections in my opinion.
An Amazing Read
For the first gay themed book I have purchased this was the perfect one to read.
It seems quite a light hearted story to start with focusing on the main character Jaz being a young gay guy sneaking into bars, dealing with school & problems at home.
Then the story picks up very quickly and can easily draw you in, the book has an overall theme of amusement but then has some quite shocking elements.
All in all a good light hearted but with deeper regions story that many can enjoy, just wish it was a little longer!
Vacuous and implausible
This is a very disappointing novel. Jaz is not a bad creation, admittedly, but all of the subsidiary characters are desperately contrived, and just about everything occurs in a parallel 'comic novel' universe that bears no relation to actual experience. There's a hint of something more serious when Jaz is attacked after a night out in Brighton, but otherwise the boy's story is hopelessly inconsequential.
There's real danger when adult authors try to ventriloquize as teenagers: one false line and the whole construction comes crashing down. This happened for me about a third of the way in, when Jaz talks about *Beverley Hills 90210* as if it were a live teen reference point. Wrong generation, sir! Is it even on UK Gold any more? Surely he'd be watching *Skins*....
