1066 and all that
I went to school in Hastings so I knew of the site of at least one British battle which is of course in the village of Battle a few miles outside of Hastings on Senlac hill.. Every school boy and person in Britain seems to know that it took place in 1066.
As I have said elsewhere that there are no duff titles in the Shire book series. They are cram packed with information and you could use it for your specialised round any day and for the few pounds they cost they are a bargain when compared to much larger works. My ambition would be to write one of their titles but I am not expert enough on any one subject.
The copy I have is only 136 and was published in 1984 and only cost me £1 second handin the last few years.. It is a gem as I now know that there were at least 48 battles in England from Adwalton Moor to Worcester.
Some I had never heard of.As the author quite rightly points out the Americans sign post their battle sites but most of ours are unknown . In these days of local history and increased leisure time more effort should be made to commemorate these historic sites.
Being a southern a lot of the northern battle sites are a mystery to me. I have visited more British battle abroad than I have in Britain have visited the western front an considerable number of times. I have even been round the battle of Waterloo in Belgium
Perhaps my New Year's resolution should be to visit British battle sites.
It would not be possible to read this book at one sitting it has to be revisited and savoured. I you are interested in matters military and and the history of Britain this book is a must.
A little gem of a book.
