The amount of data collected by governments, business and research organisations has increased markedly in recent years, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become more widely used for the storage and analysis of this data. Most GIS are restricted to static snapshots of spatial data and have difficulties with the management of time series. Change draws our attention; in any form it is important as it indicates where actions are occurring and where reaction may be necessary. People are interested in change, but current GIS remain unable to analyse changing data. Future GIS must be able to store, retrieve, analyse and present time-varying spatial data.
