Editorial Reviews

Review
'The coverage is excellent ... clear and helpful. If your undergraduate course didn't have a textbook as good as this, now is your chance to catch up.' - Ian Graham, Computing (Review of previous edition)

From the Back Cover
This successful book provides up-to-date coverage of an area that is now perceived as an essential element of a software engineer's education - the legal, professional and commercial context in which they must work. The past few years have seen a rapidly growing appreciation of the importance to software engineers of issues beyond mere technical knowledge, These include:
* the commercial and financial framework
* the effect of new technology on employment
* the safety and reliability of computer systems
* intellectual property rights in software
* computer contracts
* computer misuse
The context in which professional software engineers operate changes as quickly as technology. This new edition has been comprehensively revised to reflect these changes. The major changes have been the development of the Internet, the new Data Protection Act, and recent developments in the legal status of software engineers in the USA. All these are covered and the first chapter has been substantially extended to cover ethical issues and codes of conduct.
This book is equally valuable to practitioners and students alike. It brings together the expertise and experience of academics in software engineering, law, industrial relations, health and safety. The book explains the central principles and issues in each field and shows how they apply to software engineering.
Key Features
* In today's economic climate, software engineers are increasingly becoming business people - this book gives them a comprehensive coverage of the issues they should know about
* Most other books just look at specific programs related to software engineering eg. C++, ADA and Basic, rather than the context in which they are used
* Covers the major changes that have occured in recent years such as the Internet, Data Protection Act and changes to the legal status of software engineers
* New and highly updated edition of a successful textbook for Under/Postgraduates as well as professionals in software engineering and computer science

Customer Reviews

I recommend it to software engineers5
This book is recommended as primary text for the module Professional Issues by the British Computer Society. That is the reason why I bought the book. It deals so well with the professionalism in software engineering that you would not have to get another book. Intellectual property rights are very well dealt with, going to the very details of IPR: Data Protection Act 1998 and 1984, with a comparison of the two DPA acts. Good book that deals very well with the topic.

This book covers all except except project management5
This book covers all syllabus except for project management and does so in the context of software engineering.The book is intended for practising software engineers and final year students on honours degree courses. The style of the treatment (as opposed to the content) may therefore be too sophisticated for some candidates at Diploma level.
