Everyone can enjoy this great play
Let's face it, the best way to gain an understanding of Shakespeare's work is to be taught it. Unfortunately, I haven't been taught English Literature since I was at high school, and I found reading a Shakespeare play without help rather frustrating. Obviously, he uses words that are no longer in use, and he uses a lot of irony and sarcasm that isn't always clear. This version of A Midsummer Night's Dream allows everyone to understand and enjoy the play, and also see the beauty and wit of his prose. The original text is on the left hand pages and a modern day translation is on the right. Therefore, I would suggest reading the original text, and if you're not sure about the meaning, glance at the translation. This would be particularly useful to anyone studying AMND at school. With regards to AMND, the plot should be familiar to most people. There are 4 stories evolving at the same time: Theseus and Hippolyta's marriage, the love affairs of Lysander, Demetrius, Helena and Hermia, the play that the villagers are staging and the quarrelling between the fairies. Throw in some magic, comedy and fascinating characters, and these stories are interwoven into one. A charming play, beautifully written.
