Synopsis
Introducing the behaviour of the lower atmosphere and outlining the mechanisms involved, this work aims to fill a gap between texts which describe meteorological behaviour with no account of the mechanisms, and others which tackle the theoretical framework but assume the reader is already familiar with atmospheric behaviour. First published as "Basic Meteorology: a Physical Outline", the book has new or expanded sections on chaos, the "ozone hole" at high latitudes, man-made carbon dioxide and the greenhouse effect, acid rain, the long-term evolution of the atmosphere, and human society and climate change. There is a separate treatment of the climates of low and mid latitudes, while the chapters on radiation and global climate have been amalgamated. Many new photographs, maps and drawings have been added, increasing the international range of examples cited, and the technical appendices include a simplified treatment of the Coriolis effect and coverage of geopotential height and precipitable water.

Fundamentals of Weather and Climate
Fundamentals of weather and Climate is a comprehensive guide. Indeed, it is an essential textbook for students studying climatology. Contains many useful tables and maps. In all, a pleasure to read!
An outstanding introduction to meteorology indeed
I wanted to know more about clouds, so I bought McIlveens Fundamentals of Weather and Climate and now I know why clouds weighting millions of kilos can float by high in the sky. I have a Master of Science 15 years now, not working in the field since then, but the explanations and formulas where clear as water. The story’s about what’s behind the weather phenomena we all can see outside, were highly interesting. Since I read the book I like the rain, the fog and even the drizzle as fascinating phenomena of our natural environment. Highly recommendable for anyone interested physics and the natural environment, and who is not afraid of reading a formula.
An outstanding comprehensible introduction to meteorology
Offers intelligent and simple-to understand explanations of meteorology-based facts and elements. A highly enjoyable book and deserves to be read by those studying the subject.
