Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap
Chris Kyriacou not only knows how to communicate, but shows every evidence of understanding what classroom life is like.
Times Educational Supplement

One of the best general guides available for prospective teachers at both primary and secondary level.
Journal of Education for Teaching

The first edition of this enormously successful book examined the key skills required for successful classroom practice. Using his familiar and accessible style, Chris Kyriacou has now developed and expanded his work in this updated new edition.

Specifically, the book covers:
The nature and development of teaching skills
planning, preparing, presenting and managing lessons
classroom climate and discipline
assessing and evaluating pupils' and teacher's own performance
the DfEE's competences for newly qualified teachers
differentiation, streaming and setting
mentoring and professional development.

This book will be an invaluable aid for the student and newly qualified teacher alike, and an excellent resource for the more experienced teacher or teacher trainer.

Chris Kyriacou is Reader in Educational Psychology at the University of York.

Other books from Nelson Thornes include:

Customer Reviews

This book is a must for every teacher!4
Nicnamed 'The Bible' at my University, this book has a comprehensive index and contents page. It also has a wonderful ability to link in with whatever assignment on education that you are set. It is jargon free, with subtitles and bullet points that let you gather information at a glance. The down side is that it is perhaps more geared towards secondary teaching rather than primary, nevertheless it is one of the only books that I won't be selling when I graduate.

A must have for all student teachers.5
Of all the books I have bought throughout my teacher training, this is the one I continue to return to. It has plain speaking advice and suggestions for all of the most fundemental teaching practices.

Essential book for essential teaching skills4
.... I have found this book invaluable, both for new and trainee teachers in clearly outlining essential aspects of classroom practice, and for experienced teachers as a reminder of those essential aspects in an engaging and refreshing way.
