Unhelpful
As a student, I struggled with this subject and especially the cousework and I found this book no help at all. It was too general and gave only basic help and techniques that you could pick up in class and for exams, even the book didn't seem sure how to direct a student. It was set out strangely and was not easy to use.
I was finally able to get a B in my coursework but no help to this book. If you need help in English Lit, this book is ok as an introduction and some of the basics but no more. If you feel you understand the subject a bit more, it will give you no further insight into the exam, so if you want to go a little deeper go and read criticisms on the poems and books you have been set.

Excellent introduction to the new specs!
Adrian Beard has a good track record in supporting material for A Level. His comprehensive introduction to the unchartered waters of the new AS specifications has proved an invaluable guide this year.

Good aid for private study!
I found this book very helpful and useful. I am studying for the As English literature privately, without tuition. For this reason I have found the book essential to my studies. It does not review individual texts but gives general information about the concepts within literature and how to put together coursework and write for the exams.
