The Arts Good Study Guide
I would have to disagree with the comments made above regarding this book, as I found it very helpful when undertaking A103 Introduction to the Humanities (Open University). I have been out of further education for 16 years, and was somewhat daunted by the prospect of essay writing, and even general note taking. This book helped me to grasp the basics of both of these skills, and have already made the first month of my course much easier to deal with. I would recommend the book to anyone taking A103 or a similar course in the humanities.
A well written book that is a worthwhile read for students at any level
I am afraid that I have to disagree with some other reviewers who have been very negative about this book. I am in the later stages of studying with the OU for a degree in Humanities with Music. However, my background is perhaps a little different from some OU students in that I recently retired from a long and successful career as a research scientist and honorary university senior lecturer. I already have a BSc, MSc, PhD and several other postgraduate level professional qualifications, as well as authorship of many scientific papers and book chapters. Although I have had a life-long interest in music and literature, I had never formally studied arts subjects prior to starting with the OU. In my opinion, this book is excellent and the OU are absolutely correct in recommending it to students. It is very well written, indeed a model of clarity, and offers good, solid advice on many topics related to study, such as planning your studies, evaluating information, critical thinking, essay writing, managing projects and preparing for examinations. Most of this advice would be just as applicable to science students as to arts students and would be appropriate for students at all levels, not just absolute beginners. I feel no shame at all in 'confessing' that I have found it a useful book to refer to whilst studying various OU courses at different levels, and I have no hesitation whatsoever in highly recommending it to other prospective students of the arts, whether with the OU or not.
Just excellent!
I'm really glad to meet this book. Since I'm taking an art history course in Japan through distance learning course of Canadian university, I wanted to learn how to read text bood efficiently or how to write an essay effectively. This book helps me a lot! It's not only for an adult student in English speaking country but for a non native student like me!
