Customer Reviews

An introduction to walking in the "Scottish Highlands"4
A well thought-out and balanced selection of short to moderate walks in the "Scottish Highlands" (West Coast, Great Glen, Cairngorms and Grampians, but not the Far North) including classic routes and a few lesser known ones. The maps of the routes in this book are based on ordnance survey maps (close to 1:50000 scale level of detail along the route but with only spot heights and no contours shown) so having an ordnance survey map as recommended in the book is really a must. The landscape A4 format makes the book a little unwieldy for taking on a walk, but the route descriptions are clear and the tabulated walk details (distance, estimated duration, ascent, level of difficulty, type of path, landscape, relevant ordnance survey map, 6 figure map ref for start / finish point, dog friendliness and local facilities) appear up to date and accurate for the routes I am familiar with. The book is illustrated with many excellent, well reproduced, photos showing points of interest on the routes or nearby scenic views and give the book more of a general guide feel than a walking guide. In summary this book is effectively an introduction to walks in the "Scottish Highlands" rather than a mainstream walking guide, but is above average for this purpose.
