Synopsis
From the author of THE FAMILY AT WAR and FIRE OVER LONDON, a wartime saga set in London focusing on the lives of a cockney family.
From the Back Cover
In the autumn of 1941 Sammy Adams found a sad and lonely little girl called Phoebe wandering the bomb-scarred streets of London. A series of tragic domestic events had left the child deserted and bewildered, and Sammy and his wife Susie took her into their home and into their hearts. It reminded the family of how Boots and Emily had taken care of young Rosie all those years ago, but for Sammy and Susie there were many difficulties to be overcome to secure Phoebe's future.
But still the Adams clan managed to find joy amongst the worries and hardships of the war. Boots and Polly achieved their hearts' desire, while Boots's French-born daughter Eloise married her swashbuckling Colonel in Alexandria as Japan attacked the American fleet in Pearl Harbor and Tim was wounded and taken prisoner of war. Despite the war escalating and German bombers still raiding London, the old wartime Cockney spirit remained well to the fore.

Customer Reviews
Totally absorbing read
Another 'chapter' in the lives of the Adams family who become the readers friends. The sense of loyalty and warmth within the family regardless of what life throws at them is very touching. The characters are like people you have known all your life. I have read all the books so far and can't wait to see what happens next
The Best
I have read all of Mary Jane Staples books now and i am completly hooked on the Adams family. i cannot wait for the next instalment, they are witty, tragic and amazing all the way through. My mum says the same!
Breathless
Mary Jane Staples' books has a knack of letting me switch off from pressures at work. I enter a totally touching story about family life and how the Adams' seem to have a love of life even though its now war time. I'm looking forward to the next book "Way Ahead". Her other books about Cockney life are also a damn good read (I don't think Mrs Finch would take kindly to me swearing!). By the way, whatever happened to Cassie's parrot, did she ever get it to speak?
