Product Description

It is 1859. Eliza Forester is left motherless at the tender age of three when her father orders his wife from the house, accusing her of infidelity. He keeps the child, not out of love since he is certain she is not his, but to spite his wife. Her name is never mentioned at Harcourt Barton, the beautiful Jacobean house and estate near Exeter owned by Eliza's father. Eliza grows up believing her mother is dead. Her happiest times are spent with Ruby and Jerome, the children of tenant farmers on her father's estate. When, at sixteen, Eliza's innocent friendship with Jerome turns to love, Eliza - like her mother - is banished to London to live with her aunt. Her father, determined she will make a 'good' match, lies to her that Jerome has married, and forces her to wed aristocratic, dissolute Hedworth Lambton. It is the greatest mistake of her life . . .

Customer Reviews

A wonderfully absorbing novel5
Anita Burgh's "The House at Harcounrt" is a well-written, multilayered, richly textured novel. Her story-telling is supurb, with characters that are finely drawn and engaging. The plot twists and turns, full of surprises and shocks to keep the reader turning pages. The author's grasp of the Victorian era is that of an expert, and the reader is effortlessly transported to that age. Descriptions are telling and the pace, while never hurried, never lags for a moment, either. The novel's conclusion is hugely satisfying and it must be said that praise for Anita Burgh is very well deserved.

The House at Harcourt-another Anita Burgh Treat5
As always, Anita's book intrigues and holds you - you don't want to put it down. The scope of her knowledge of Victorian life above and below stairs is truly excellent and all the characters are believable and well drawn.

Anita's themes are always different and this book is certainly that, although you may think that it could be just the run of the mill thing where the rich lady falls for the impoverished servant - this is not the case here.

She has, once again, written a very good read and one I feel that will please her regulars and gain new followers.

excellant5
I thought this book was brilliant. It was extremely well written and really makes the reader feel as if they are part of the story themselves. I'm a great lover of historical novels and this didn't disappoint!
