John Bird's approach to mathematics, based on numerous worked examples supported by problems, is ideal for students of a wide range of abilities. Theory is kept to a minimum, with the emphasis firmly placed on problem-solving skills, making this a thoroughly practical introduction to the mathematics engineering students need to master.
The book presents a logical topic progression, rather than following the structure of a particular syllabus and is suitable for all Level 3 vocational students and first year undergraduates in Engineering. However, coverage has been carefully matched to the mathematics units within the 2007 BTEC National specifications.
In this fifth edition, new material on inequalities and differentiation of parametric equations, implicit and logarithmic functions as well as an introduction to differential equations has been added. The book now also includes two new revision tests and even more problems for students to work through.
Additional chapters on linear correlation, linear regression and sampling and estimation theories can be downloaded for free from http://books.elsevier.com/companions/9780750685559
Support material for tutors is available as a free download at http://textbooks.elsevier.com:
- Instructor's manual with full solutions and suggested marking scheme for all 18 revision tests in the book

A major teaching resource!
I am an FE teacher, rather than student, but find this book aninvaluable resource. There is some explanation, but a major strength is the number of worked examples, throughout the text, followed by self assessment questions. I use these with my students constantly, and even myself learning new things like Boolean algebra, which I now have to teach!
Go for this rather than the "Basics" edition
I wanted to re-educate myself in engineering mathematics, having passed my A levels in Pure Maths and Applied Maths over 40 years ago. I bought the "Basics" edition of this work. The full "Engineering Mathematics" edition is the better buy as it includes the "Basic" edition. Both editions, i.e. the full and the Basic versions, are excellent books, that lay out clearly the main principles of the different topics and test your understanding of what you've read with progressive exercises. The two versions of Engineering Mathematics are suitable for any mathematics course even though the titles might mislead you to view them as suitable only for engineering students.
Very useful Engineering Maths Book
Me as a first year student of Engineering Degree Program studying in London found this book extremely useful and applicable.
The book is written in a way that the reader can actually feel that s/he is understanding the Maths and becoming an expert in Maths slowly slowly (if especially you don't have so many ideas about Maths) which builds up some kind of psychological confidence in himself/herself. John Bird starts to explain the Maths from the basics and gradually builds up which encourages student to keep studying the book rather than giving up. I personally found this book addictive due to the style and gradully changing hardness level. The book is also split into different parts such as calculus, algebra, mensuration, statistics which I beleive is great.
Probably the best thing about this book is that all the exercise questions are similar to the ones shown and explained in the book. So I definitely suggest the reader to follow the solutions of the problems without writing it down then when it comes to the exercises definitely I suggest you to ATTEMPT and SOLVE the problems on a piece of paper. If you can't I can ensure you that you will see the similer problem already solved in the book just go back and have a look at it and follow the same steps.
John Bird has very very useful books such as Basic Engineering Mathematics, Technician Mathematics 1,2,3,4/5 series (which are full of Mathematics Applications in Engineering), Electrical Circuit Theory and Technology (a great thick giant book which gives all the essentials of Electrical Principles).
Also this book is not as expensive as other books such as Engineering Mathematics by K.A. Stroud, Mathematics for Engineers by Anthony Croft, Modern Engineering Mathematics by Gylen and so on.
Great Investment
