From the Back Cover
Higher Education Reformed discusses the challenges faced by universities and colleges in the turbulent environment of the new millennium - challenges to their institutional integrity and intellectual authority. Despite its remarkable persistence over the centuries from the Middle Ages to modern times the university may struggle to survive in this new environment.
This book contains specially commissioned papers by some of the most respected academics currently working in the field of higher education. The contributors outline the situation as it is now and look forward to the developments of the coming years.
The challenges are examined from historical, managerial, organizational and epistemological perspectives. The broad conclusion drawn is that, despite the scale of these challenges, the university is not only likely to survive but to thrive in the new millennium - but that, to do so, it must undergo a sea change.
This book is one of the New Millenium Series which aims to make accessible, both for the lay reader and the professional, the complexities of education at all levels.
