Short Stirling aircraft WW II
An outstanding and detailed analysis of Britain's first four-engined bomber. Little has been written about the Stirling in the past five decades, since it was taken out of service in the 1950's, and non survive today. It was deemed a failure by some, since it could not reach desired heights, due to it's body mass and shorter than desired wing span. The Stirling project was allowed to proceed in the late 1930's, although the government deemed that the wingspan be no more than 99 feet, which was the maximum that existing hangers could accept. The government was unwilling or unable to create larger hangers, so the Short Stirling was really doomed from the beginning. Due to its extraordinary length, coupled with it's 99 foot wingspan, the Stirling was unable to reach desired heights over enemy territory, thus most were shot down by ground artillery.
The book is a great review of the life and death of the Stirling, with very interesting narrative, images, data bases, and biographies of many crew members.
