From the earliest pieces to the sophisticated equipment used in the Gulf War of 1991, artillery has always played a deciding role in the outcome of battles. This illustrated history traces the development and use of artillery through the ages. The author describes the increasingly widespread use of artillery in many European conflicts, including the War of the Roses in Britain, and goes on to relate how the period 1601 to 1800 witnessed further dramatic developments in its design and use on the battlefield. From looking at many aspects of artillery in the wars of the 19th century, particularly the Napoleonic, American Civil, Crimean and Boer Wars, his account examines the use of artillery in the two great world wars of the 20th century and concludes with the smaller wars of the late millennium.

Customer Reviews
A good book for non-specialists interested in history.
This an interesting book for the non-specialist interested in military history. It contains no complicated technical theory. Most aspects in the development of guns is covered. The problems in producing guns in the earlier years is described in an intersting way.Their use, tactics and deployment is described.Fire control equipment for newer artillery is not mentioned. This is an important part of todays artillery. The selection of illustrations in the book could have been better.
An interesting book for the historical interrested.
This is an interesting book for the historical interested non-specialist.It contains no complicated theoretical infomation, but it a lot of information on the development of artillery until today. The different problems in producing guns back in the history is mentioned. But lacks mentioning of fire control equipment. This is an important part of the artillery. The book also has a very small selection of illustrasjons.
