Synopsis
In 1507, the German mapmaker Waldseemuller published a world map, labelling a portion of the southern continent across the Atlantic Ocean with the name America. Although the map was based on the work of Italian scientist and explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, this work looks at the history behind the naming of America to discover that its name did not in fact originate from this man. It was named after the wealthy British merchant, Richard Amerike, who had sent famous explorer John Cabot in search of a new fishing ground many years before, and had stumbled upon the continent. Yet at the same time, some people sought to credit Columbus with the discovery of the New World. This narrative history explores all of the key characters involved to unravel the true story.
